Life

You make my dreams come true

Speaking of dancing and how it makes me smile, this scene from (500) Days of Summer made me laugh out loud in surprise and amusement when I first saw the movie. It’s a scene that I can watch over and over again and it always makes me happy:

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you really should. I didn’t know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by its charm.  I definitely recommend it because it’s not your average love story and it really is worth the 87% it received on Rotten Tomatoes.

Taking the first step

“The secret of getting things done is to act.” – Dante Alighieri

Over the past few years, I’ve been slowly accumulating a list of things that I want to do and learn. Some may call it a bucket list of sorts.

The list is starting to become a bit lengthy, but I am well aware that many of the things are easy to do and complete. I just need to make the effort and do it.

So I’ve decided to dive right in and use this blog to document my experiences.

The first one: take sewing lessons.

Deciding to actually go through with it and then deciding where to take lessons were hard decisions to make. My mother is a sewer and so is a friend of mine, but when it came down to asking them to teach me, I knew the main issue would be timing.

It’s a lot easier and convenient to take classes close to where I live – worth the price I’m about to pay.

I’m actually quite excited about it and my first class is in a few weeks. Learning to sew may not be the hippest or most exciting thing, but I think it’s kinda cool. It’s a skill that I’ve always wanted to learn (beyond the basics of fixing a button) and who knows, I may discover a passion I never thought I had.

Plus I’ll finally be able to hem all my clothes now – a vital skill for someone as short as I am.

I’ll keep you posted on my progress and I’ll share what I tackle next on my list.

Dance like Matt

The reason I always come back to these “Where the Hell is Matt?” videos is because of the simple joy that you see on people’s faces as they join him and do a crazy dance.

It looks like a blast. Complete fun. And that makes me smile.

An introduction to my habits

readlistenI love movies, books, music and TV shows. Who doesn’t?

Here’s the thing: I have a habit of getting into shows, books and musicians late in the game.

At face value, this may seem like a bad thing – it means I rarely get to be the “one who discovered the awesomeness of…”

But the truth is that I don’t actually care.

Waiting and being late in the game has its benefits:

  • My friends and the general public let me know if something is worth my time
  • If the person/book/show/etc lasts over time, it’s a sure sign that there’s something there – I know I’m not wasting my time or energy
  • If it’s a show, I have tons to catch up on. It means no waiting until next week or season to find out what happens next. Anticipation is great but fulfilling a desire immediately is even better! The same applies for books too
  • There’s lots of fresh material for me to soak up and enjoy while everyone has ants in their pants, waiting for the next season or the next book
  • There are many opportunities for me to borrow the book, DVD or CD from friends who are already fans (cost savings!)

Here are some examples of things I love now but didn’t pay attention to for a long time:

  • Dexter – this is the show I’m currently exploring. I just finished season 3 and I love it.
  • Harry Potter – read the books 10 years after the first one was published.
  • Friends – I started watching the first season while the latter half of the 10th (and final) season was airing.
  • Doctor Who (w/ the 9th & 10th Doctors) -  I started watching while season 3 was airing.
  • Lost – I started watching while season 3 or 4 was airing.
  • Grey’s Anatomy – I started watching while season 3 was airing
  • John Mayer – I had a friend who loved his music and wanted to go see him live. We all said no. A year later, we were all big fans.
  • James Morrison – I recently discovered his music, three years late

The list could go on forever.

So what does this mean? People get to be excited and watch in anticipation as I fall in love and become addicted. They participate enthusiastically as I go on and on about these shows or books that they’ve loved for years already.

This also means that people think I’m slow and really out of touch – but I don’t mind.

From this point forward, I plan to write about and share my thoughts on all of my “new discoveries” here. So please bare with me – sometimes I’ll be on the ball and other times I won’t. Either way, your feedback and comments will greatly be appreciated.

One of the many reasons why I love Toronto:

Pillow fight

Public pillow fights at Yonge-Dundas Square.

I stopped by Saturday afternoon with a friend to watch as random strangers pulled out their pillows for some fun. We laughed ourselves silly as people enthusiastically returned to their childhood days and participated in a good-hearted pillow fight.

It wasn’t violent.  Some people were dressed up.  A few little kids happily and safely participated.  And it lasted a very long time.

Good job Newmindspace!
