About

My name is Uma Chandran and I’m a Communications Coordinator at CNW Group.

I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario, where I studied Media, Information, and Technoculture (MIT) with an additional major in Computer Science. Following my undergraduate degree, I completed the Corporate Communications + Public Relations post-graduate certificate program at Centennial College.

During my time at Western, I completed an academic internship at Big Brothers of London and helped with their “Bowl For Kids’ Sake” fundraiser.

I then spent 16 months working as a Corporate/Employee Communications Intern for IBM Toronto’s Center for Advanced Studies and later eight months working as a Knowledge Engineering Assistant for IBM WebSphere Application Server, where I edited and published technical documents.

While I was completing my certificate program at Centennial, I worked with a team to organize and execute a Spring Fashion Show at a retirement home, did freelance work for the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, and completed a two month internship at Sun Life Financial. Once my internship was complete, I signed on for a few more months at Sun Life as a Digital Communications Specialist.

Beyond my interests in PR, computer science and social computing, I am also an avid reader and movie watcher. I also love sports (especially soccer), spending time with friends and family, travelling, and playing with my family’s black Labrador retriever named Chellam.

I have had an online presence of some form since around 1997 through various websites and blogs – most of which are no longer active. This new blog will serve as a place to document my experiences and thoughts on social media, public relations and communications, and any other life experiences I may encounter through the end of my undergraduate career and beyond.
